A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting a white disc bearing at top a gold semi-sun with nine gold rays, in front of a maroon cross with four equal arms, in base on each side a gold fleur-de-lis slanting outward, all within a circular maroon loop with ends horizontal at the top.
The fleur-de-lis and the four arms of the cross symbolize the area of operations and the battle honors of the Hospital in World War II. The maroon loop alludes to the lifting up, hovering and evacuation capabilities of the helicopter in modern military medical activities. The maroon cross refers to the outstanding care and hospital achievements of the unit. The sun with its healing rays symbolizes the rising sun in the east, and is also used here to represent combat service in the Republic of Vietnam. White and maroon are colors used by the Medical Department.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 30 December 1968.
